Saint-Barnabé: Algorithmic Worshop Eucor

Am Mittwoch, den 27. Juni, also letzte Woche, hatte unser Lehrstuhl einen Algorithmic Workshop in Hostellerie Saint-Barnabé, Murbach-Buhl, Alsace, Frankreich organisiert. Ich habe mich mit Robin und Christine frühe um 08.00 Uhr getroffen, und wir sind zusammen in Robins auto circa eine Stunde nach Murbach gefahren.

Drei Universitäten, einschließlich unserer, sind für den Workshop angereist -- die andere zwei sind die Institut Universitaire de Technologie de Mulhouse und die Institut Universitaire de Technologie de Colmar. Ich habe nachgeschaut und rausgefunden, dass beide Institute zu eine Hauptuniversität; Université de Haute Alsace gehören.

Dieses Mal haben die Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter von die Universitäten ihre kurzen Berichte ihrer Forschungsarbeits präsentiert. In diesem Zusammenhang habe ich mein Thema "Competitive Active-Smoothing in Unknown Environments" vorgestellt. Die Leute von Frankreich sind ein bisschen langweilig, aber das war ein Workshop für Algorithmen und Datenstrukturen... was sonst.

Glücklicherweise war das Mittagessen super! Ich hatte das Hänchenmenü, und fand ich es sehr lecker und hatte mir gut geschmeckt. Nach dem Essen, sind wir hoch zu den historischen Kathedrale gewandert (guck mal Bild #9 unten). Die war zwischen dem Jahr 1200 und 1300 erbaut worden, und mich interessierte der perfektes 'Photo-op' in der Nähe des Waldes.

Insgesamt hatte ich mich gut untergehalten und viel Vergnügen in Saint-Barnabé in Murbach Frankreich gehabt. Jetzt kommen meine ausgewählten Bilder und natürlich hat Christoph seine Kollektion in seiner Gallery (wenn ich den Link von ihm habe, werde ich die URL hier angeben).

Die Rückkehr der Über-Lords und Über-Ladies

Ahh... wir sind zurück! Schon sehr früh heute Morgen haben die Mistresses (Ann Kathrin und Bettina) und die Overlords (Chris, Benni, und ich) von Badminton super gut gespielt.



Fast vier Wochen hatten Chris und ich noch nicht zusammen gespielt, weil er bei der Tour-EUCOR war (lies mal seinen Blog hier) und einen Kongress in Berlin hatte. Außerdem hat er sich am Finger verletzt -- aber dem geht es jetzt schon wieder viel besser -- dann kann er nicht den Schlägergriff genau anhalten. Trotz seiner Verletzung kam er zum Badmintonspielen und wir haben sogar ein paar Spiele gewonnen. Dass hat ihn sehr gut gefreut:


In der mitte des zweiten Doppel-Spieles, mussten die Lords und Ladies einen Streit schlichten. Der Federball war in die falsche Richtung geflogen und es war nicht klar wer hatten den Punkt bekommen sollte.

"Look, it was soooo OUT!"
"No, it was sooo IN, you stupid cow...."
"But the feather is in the court, you silly bird..."
"Hey, the rest of the ball is outside the line!"

Unto thee We bestow and giveth

I found out today, of such glorious news, that Louisa's father has been conferred an honourific title by none other than His Majesty the King, Duli Yang Maha Mulia, Seri Paduka Baginda, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin (who apparently has just ascended the Malaysian throne himself in April this year, in a rather elaborate coronation ceremony). Clearly, we now have to address the newly created 'Panglima Jasa Negara' of the State of Sarawak (Malaysia) as 'Datuk Soon' -- no more 'Uncle' Soon (or 'Mr' Soon) *smile*.

So, well, I guess congratulations are in order here, My Lord, Datuk Soon :)

Louisa explained that this honour was for her father's stern dedication and sincere contribution, as a loyal subject to the King, who has made such extraordinary impact in his home-state community. I added that perhaps, just perhaps, the few rounds of golf Datuk Soon had had with His Majesty probably helped too -- you know, gets one closer to his Sovereign :P Well, if you ask me, and if I have a handicap score of 18 and always come close to par everytime I play, I'd be delighted to golf with the King too... heh heh heh.

Unfortunately though, we cannot address Louisa (the daughter of the Datuk) as 'Lady Soon', like the English peerage system, as the title of 'Datin' is reserved for the wife of the 'Datuk' only. So Louisa must then try to achieve the honorable title of 'Datin Paduka' in her own right, if she wants to, of course. I have to check back with Lou when she does accomplish this (notice, I didnt write 'if' she accomplish this... *hint*hint*) Alternatively, well... erh... she can marry a known 'Datuk' who is still single :P

On another note, I think Louisa must really, really crack her head on what to get her dad for Father's Day that will top what the King has given.... hmmm... hmmmmmmmm.... *BIG SMILE*

Methinks this possierlich cat doth protest too much

It has been over three weeks since I last went for a jog, and today, feeling a bit guilty, I decided to complete my usual 15-km route, leisurely. Man... that took me over 80 minutes! And I was almost breathless when I arrived back on campus. And it took me a further 10 minutes before my heartbeat returned to normal. So... note to self, "(i) Go do more runs (shorter ones) this weekend and next week, then double-check on timing on the 15-km this time next week. (ii) Find people to spar with at Baddy this Saturday morning, too bad Chris is in Berlin *sigh*. (iii) And, well... stop having fried chicken at every meal, just have them at every other meal... hehehe... *Grumble*Grumble*."

Karen (the future Frau Sutter), hailed me on MSN some days ago, and as always, we exchanged some good conversations. I can feel her outpouring excitement for the upcoming wedding *BIG SMILE*. Also, she has now uploaded her 'bridal photos' (shots taken while in Hong Kong last Christmas) up on her friendster site.

Beautiful. No need for other words.

Let's hope Alex and Karen take good care of each other, for better or for worse, in happiness and sadness, etc., etc., ... :) And until there are 5 little Alexes and 5 little Karens, and beyond.


Ahh... and before I sign off this post, I just have to mention that I am having such a roll of a time with Asymptote! Best ever figure-generator I have met -- discovered it (and now a convinced follower) from the good people I used to work with. And I have (and still am) painstakingly converting all my earlier figures in my thesis to this superb-high-quality, non-degenerative, and succintly-precise format offered by Asy. And my efforts seem to be paying off, albeit slowly. Check out the example figure below... then check out the zoom at 500%, or even at 1600%! Use picture #2, it opens a PDF file. (Asy codes here.) Or for those still skeptical people (like my dear counsellor brother), use the PDF file and zoom to 6400%!!



No deterioration, what-so-ever! And I am so getting into the hang of producing modules in Asy, that I didn't realise I have programmed almost all of my ground algorithms in it. And because they WORK, in Asy as well as in Java and C++, this becomes another proof of soundness of the algorithms -- I'd say, the 'offline' version :) Well, I now need to find the correct words/phrases/paras/sections/chapter? to describe this well-suited observation.

Problem now is, whenever I see figures by others that offer no high-quality renditions, I get irritated. Figures have to be perfect, and precise!

Hmm... let's see other reasons to grumble this week:
1. Freezer door inside fridge is broken -- shouldn't have yanked it.
2. My handphone is definitely broken beyond repair...

Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei

Am Mittwoch hat Marius seiner Schlusspräsentation tatsäschlich angeliefert, und wir haben einen Film von ihm aufgenommen (und ich hatte auch Tobi versprochen bevor der nach Thailand ging). Wenn die Film bereit ist, will ich ein Link hier errichten. -- Die Film ist jetzt bereit: klick an Bild #3 (requires Lecturnity Player). Ich dachte Marius war sooo nervös und man sieht der viel Stress hätte weil er viel zu tun mussten -- die Arbeit mit NightLabs, und meine ärgerlichen Bemerkungen zufriedenstellend :P Ja, ja, ich weiß, dass ich immer 'high-quality' Beschäftingung von meine Studenten angefordert. Deswegen ich manchmal ein Dorn in Auge sein, aber, es ist kein Baum, der nicht zuvor ein Sträuchlein gewesen.

Dennoch nach die anstrengende Präsentation, wir erleichtert aufatmen gewesen sind. Dann machten wir ein paar Bilder...
   



Zweitens, habe ich und Suzanne (keine Angst Leute, die ist nicht Suzanne Albers aber sie ist meine neue Nachbarin -- sie kommt aus Dresden und arbeit an die Freiburg-Messe) einen gesundes Curry am Samstag in ihre Küche gekocht (natürlich, weil meine Küche nicht so sauber ist :P). Suzanne hat gesagt, dass ,,die asiatische Küche nutzt seit jeher Gewürze nicht nur wegen des Geschmacks. Denn Pflanzenwirkstoffe können die Gesundheit positiv beeinflussen. Damit beeinflusst der Wurzelextrakt Krankheiten wie Rheuma, chronische Darmentzündungen oder Asthma.``

Cool huh? Aber das große Problem ist dass wir brauchen fast zwei stunden für diesen gesundes Curry kochen, und nur 15 minuten zu alles fertig Essen *sigh*
