Found something I didn't lose: NLC West Video
I decided to tidy up my C: drive today after (finally) managing to move all the necessary contents from the old computer to this new one. Tidying up, apparently, takes a considerable amount of time -- what with all the reorganisations and the creation of new folder-names-that-make-sense. Previously, I have had quite a mountaineous pile of discontentedly messy data, which didnt bother me because I had Google desktop running, and Google seems to be advocating to us to be as messy as possible so that they can show off their trusty search engine. But a bit of control among the chaos should turn out something good, I hope. All these activities led me to discover a copy of the NLC West corporate video, which amazingly runs on Flash, sitting at some weird location in the forest of my disorganised directories. "Erhh... this NLC West... what's that Kai?", you say...
Well, 'NLC' -- that's short for National Liaison Committee. And 'West' refers to its branch in Western Australia. NLC is a not-for-profit organisation for international students studying in Australia. Among the many things it does, the NLC contributes to Federal and State Government inquiries and processes into changing and improving international education in Australia, on behalf of all the international students it represents. "NLC Australia (Inc.)" is the main body with national office bearers running the show, and there are other NLC executive affiliations which include the branches from NSW (New South Wales), ACT (Australia Capital Territory), VIC (Victoria), SA (South Australia), QLD (Queensland), and TAS (Tasmania).
I played a rather active role in NLC during my undergraduate days while at The University of Western Australia (UWA). That was quite some time ago; 1999 to 2001. People who know me then would remember that I was Director of the International Students Services at UWA, and then moved on to take up the state executive position as NLC West's Secretary of State (for 3 weeks), before being elected as NLC West's State Convenor (that's the chair position of the state branch). By virtue of being 'convenor', I automatically get a seat on several committees on both state and national levels. And while it was really, really hectic and exhaustive throughout my stint (eg. NSW and WA has a time-difference of 3 hours, and people in the east like to call people in the west at 6am just because its already 9am there...), I did manage to have an enjoyable time with this experience and made so many friends. Amazingly, I didn't fail in any of my exams at uni too, thank God.
>> Now, back to that corporate video:
It was during my term in 2000-2001 that I commissioned and authorized a 'corporate-video' specifically for NLC West (I had a hand in its production too). It was fundamentally meant to raise awareness of the what the organisation does, and to introduce my fellow office bearers. Go on and view it if you can spare 5 minutes (clicking the picture will open up a new window and run the flash-video):
PS: (UPDATED) The soundtrack is originally a Solo Violin piece entitled 'Partita No. 3 in E, BWV 1006/I. Preludio'. Venessa Mae reorganised the same piece, which was also recomposed in 'Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 46/1st Movement', and called it 'I'm A-Doun for Lack O'Johnnie'. Sounds like a mouthful, I know, Jean, so dont laugh :P It has been quite awhile since I last immersed myself in such haute couture of the classics. "Indeed, denouements like Te Deum and Coriolanus can sapid and match the likes of La Sanadora and Pax Deorum (played in F#-major-allegretto-AND-appoggiatura)"... don’t you think?
PPS: The website indicated in the video no longer exists (dont really know what my successors did to its original contents), but the new national and state sites are still up... see above links.

Mr Kai,
Wow... that was really ages ago, weren't it? I remember u discussing the video in my room at St Columba -- and u keep telling me to wash Dolphina (I still have her, still pink... *BIG SMILE*).
Btw, can u send a copy of that to me? Or can u upload it to YouTube or something? I want to show my friends.
Also, u made the WAMCW 2000 video for K.K. too right? U have that one to share?
Lots of hugs,
Pagan Chee
aahhhhhhh...... i remember u ran away from perth without letting the world know :) must have been real quick to finish and be in germany already.
isn't sofie somewhere there? maybe she's back in spore already... will have to mail her.

i met a german babe today.. but she had a ring on her finger.

perth is where i call home for now.. busying myself with the usual stuff. lifelong student, but i think i'm going to have to finish off this period of life and move on as well.. :) can't seem to stay away from student representation stuff. anything that helps a group of people, i like.
by the way, i just got back from melb... nus conference... vsu got repealed yesterday..umm.. by now, it'd be the day before.
good stuff.... since u put up links to some old video, i give u the link to some old pics hehehe... this link are where i placed nus balarat conference 2002. check it out man:)
oh. if you have time, can i bug u to check it out and see if u can tweak the javascript?
you're like the only wiz at javascript i know... others either don't touch it at all, or try to tell me how it's done in c :p problem is i can pop the image in a new window, but when an image of a different dimension pops up in the window, it takes the dimension of the previous window/image.. how can i make it so the window dynamically resizes if the image size is different? specifying it doesn't seem to work.
nic:)
morning Kai....... well it's morning over here, not so sure when you read this.............
regarding that video, i thought that was very well done! how come i didnt have a national-exec during my term to think about it..... it would have saved a lot of time convincing those ppl from DIMA.

anyway, so how's life over there Mr DOC soon to be......... :)
just dropped in email to Louisa to see how she is over there and how Eric is doing in Sydney so thought i'd drop a few lines to you as well.

@Jean: Soundtrack title updated on main blog, for you :)
@CH: Sorry lar... I forgot about ACT. It's a 'territory', not a 'state'... hahaa
Peace and blessings be upon you.
Khai,
My wife liked your viedo so much, she asks if you have time to teach her how to do it... I think you look great in it, was that really you in the Arab head-dress? That's why I remember asking you once if you are somewhat related to King Abdullah of Jordan.
Salams,
Mazeeh
Hey Khair,
I brought back alot of memories about NLC, the time we all worked together and strive with one aim in our heart. Those days we live in passion. Saw alot of familiar faces in that video, how I wished I could have created on for Victoria then.
signing off,
2001-2002 VIC Convenor.. :P you know who
Heya Kai,
It's Tim here mate! I see all of your international student acquaintances leaving messages, so I shall too. So you shall know you still have true blue Aussie support too!
I knew that when you took office as Director ISS during my Guild Presidency, things were going to be different. Check out what you spurred your committee to achieve... and man you left quite an impact! And all in record budget of AUD 18,000.00!! Sweet!! Its just that your successors couldnt really fill up your shoes afterwards, but that didnt bother me, I didnt serve a second term either :)
OK. Just so you know, I am now in Canberra, in this posh law firm. Still aspiring to be a minister some day... I'll tell you more about it in my email. Wont be settling down yet, Laura is in Brisbane... soon, perhaps, and you'll be among the first to know.
Cheers mate!
T. Huggins
... hang on, I just remembered now. At the ISSUWA AGM in 2000, where you guys celebrated your 10th anniversary, there was another video, no? You have that somewhere on your now-very-clean C: drive to share?
I was on that video, I know. So you'd better go find it...
Cheers!
oi Kai! What the hell is 'Te Deum and Coriolanus ... F#-major-allegretto-AND-appoggiatura' ??!!
Anyway, yeah man... You make me look bad. I was Director 1999, and we didnt have all these gizmos that u have. Hahaha... the committee were mostly from the faculty of Biz and Law, that figures.
Still, love the video. Can u burn it on CD and mail it to me? Please... pretty please...
Thanx. I know you will :)
Take care over in the Fatherland.
Joy
oi mate! hahaha..... that is YOU isnt it? the bloke between those gorgeous belly-dancers? when was that? Damn! i sooo missed that oppoturnity.
...like we used to say, Kai... YOU are the Man!
Hi Khaireel, its Evelyn.
I hope you remember me, I used to be the VP of Club East when you were Director ISS. Found out about your blog from the grapevines (oh, amazing site by the way), and I thought I'd leave a comment, since this video you put up dreged up old good memories again. It was indeed fun and fulfilling, really, working with you and your team. I did wish I could have inspire my members like you did *smile*
I am in Manila now, helping dad manage his hotels. If you are headed for the Philippines any time in the future, call me up, and stay at one of our hotels -- and I promise you get the best treatment from up *smile*
Best and warmest regards,
Evelyn Marife Yap
Kai...... mate, finally, now we know where ya been all these whiles! Got ya link from Tim. I shoulda got ya execs to work on a video for us too -- the Senate Com would have paid for it too, such quality. Impressive.
Haha........ I shall forward this video to my Hellas buddies here, I am now back in Athens, just so ya know. And mate, we should hook up sometime, since we are on the same continent. I'll mail ya, ok?
Cheers!
Emmanuel Hondros
G'day Kai!
Heard abt the video on your blog, and I've just gotta check it out -- and glad I am. I must have missed it when you first had it screened, cos I remembered being invited to speak at NLC West's State Education Conference, the year that you were State Convenor, but you had me scheduled after lunch, and you ran the video at the opening, and so I missed it.
No worries, I knew it was good -- still is! That was what Pam Stubbs was talking about, I reckon.
Let's catch up some time!
Kristy Duckhams
(in case you forgot, I was UWA Guild Prez 2001!)
oooohhhhh, i soooo looovvveeeee that video Kai! thanx for making it:) makes it all worthwhile just to be your Liaison Officer.
Just thinking about it, it seems that u were ahead of ur time, no? we didnt have youTube-like access then... ah well, u were the smart one hahaha!!
Lots of hugs and love,
The 'Beyonce' of your Destiny's Child!
Hi Kai,
Antonio and Sri are here too. We just watched your video (again...) on my new flat panel. Gloria said we (she and I) looked fatter in 2000 than now. I told her that her cooking have inspired me to grow thin... hehehe.
Come back to Perth soon, we miss you already:)
Any chance that anyone out there still has the video shown on the last day of NLCAC Perth 2000? I looked bad in it but it was good fun watching it nonetheless...
Jean, I never got your email!!! Where did you send it to??? I'm in Melbourne now working in the public sector (oh joy)
Louisa
